Skeleton Coast Tours

Embark on a remarkable journey through Namibia’s Skeleton Coast, one of the world’s most enigmatic and untouched wildernesses. This tour offers a unique opportunity to explore dramatic landscapes, historical shipwrecks, and diverse wildlife. Travelling in a convoy of 4×4 vehicles, you’ll navigate along the coastline and through the desert, experiencing the awe-inspiring beauty of this remote region.

Tour Information

Our adventure begins in Swakopmund at 07:45, where we gather with full tanks, distribute in-car radios, and prepare the convoy for an 08:00 departure. We head north along the coastline to Terrace Bay, where we refuel and continue to Möwe Bay. Here, the official road ends, and we enter the beach (tide permitting). We set up camp near the beach, just north of Möwe Bay. Please bring your own lunch box for today. Petrol vehicles need at least 260 litres of fuel and diesel vehicles 220 litres for the journey.

Today, we travel approximately 150 km along the beach (tide permitting) to the Hoarusib River mouth, where we can view the remnants of the Ventura bomber wreckage. Venturing inland, we explore the riverbed, spotting wildlife and admiring geological formations like the clay castles. We drive through isolated valleys to the Khumib River and camp on its banks, where we might spot the elusive Brown Hyena.

After breakfast, we head towards the Kunene River mouth, travelling about 120 km along the beach past the famous Dunedin Star wreck site and expansive salt pans. We camp in the dunes at Bosluis Bay and stay for two nights.

Today, we travel approximately 40 km to the Kunene River mouth. This area is a haven for birdwatching, with 72 different species, and is home to Leatherback and Green Sea turtles. The Nile crocodile also inhabits these wetlands (NO swimming).

Spend the rest of the day at your leisure.

We embark on a challenging dune-driving day, covering around 65 km eastwards to Hartmann Valley. No prior dune driving experience is necessary. We stay close to the Kunene River, enjoying beautiful scenic spots along the way. Our camp for the night is set up in Hartmann’s Valley.

Today’s journey takes us approximately 120 km down Hartmann Valley to Green Drum. We spot wildlife such as zebras, oryx, and springboks. The routes are slow, allowing us to fully appreciate the scenery. We camp in the wild near Oropembe.

We travel approximately 200km down the Khumib River and through mountainous valleys towards the Hoarusib River. Today is a slow drive, with elephants frequently spotted along the way. The lush riverbanks are lined with Mopani and Makalani palm trees. We call this the ‘elephant drive day.’ We spend the whole day driving until we reach Sesfontein, where we camp amongst the mountains for our last evening together.

After breakfast, everyone departs for their own destinations. You may choose to visit Etosha Pan, continue via Caprivi to Botswana, or travel back to Windhoek or Swakopmund through Kamanjab or Khorixas (Damaraland).
